Our Church history begins in 1985, a group of 12 people got together, sharing a vision to start a church in Keilor. Bob Hayes become the first church secretary, and he shares his memories of how Sydenham Baptist Church came into being: "Our first meetings were held in my and wife Nancy's home, while next door at Wally and Jan Gladman's house, the children were entertained and cared for. Having the two houses together was a real God-send in the early days."
"The core group of 12 was charged with the early planning and, on February 16 1986, we held our first service at Keilor Downs Secondary College as Keilor Baptist Church. In those days we referred to ourselves as the 'suitcase church' because each week we'd set up the hall, then painstakingly pack up everything after services."
"By the time we were officially constituted on September 13, 1987, we had 20 regular members with 120 guests in attendance on the inaugural day. There was much excitement and dedication to the task ahead, and we all felt encouraged as others joined. In the ensuing years we had regular attendances of anything up to 120. In those early days, Rev Lindsay Smith from Rowville was a great help and was instrumental in acquiring land, with the plans in the pipeline to begin construction of our own church building."
"After much hard work in raising funds for the new building, and involvement in many working bees, the day came on May 28 2000, when our vision for our own place came to fruition. Our church building was built at 350 Calder Park Drive and since then we've watched the church grow to now meet the spiritual needs of about 350 people every week during services, with about the same number of community members using the facility at other times during the week."
